Heather - Soprano Sub Heather is originally from Chicago with a long and varied musical past that focuses most passionately around voice. In 2012, she graduated from Northeastern Illinois University with a degree in Music Education. Over the years, she has had the joy of singing in numerous choirs, cover bands, original bands, for special events and even busking around Chicago with her former guitarist.
Since moving to Southern California in 2017 with her partner and tiny human, she had been looking for a musical outlet to keep her musically and creatively engaged and was delighted to cross paths with Voxy.
When she’s not singing her face off with the talented ladies of Voxy, she can usually be found spending time with her partner and life-giving child on adventures and/or on a mission to honor all her many (seemlingly unrelated, yet related) creative interests, while her chihuahua, cat, tortoises and fish sit back and observe the chaos like old zen masters.
Margaret - Soprano Sub
Margaret is an opera/hybrid singer and voice teacher from San Francisco. Margaret loves to sing and perform, and was involved in a myriad of performance projects in San Francisco before her move to San Diego. She was the leader of the a cappella group Vocal Edition, performed regularly at local cabaret productions and private events, and created online voice tutorials and music videos for her YouTube channel Mags Sing Along. You'd also find her almost weekly at her favorite karaoke spots!
After settling into San Diego, she luckily stumbled upon Voxy and is so grateful to be a substitute for this awesome group!
When she isn't singing, teaching, or growing a tiny human, she can be found hiking, backpacking, at the beach, or spending quality time with her husband, friends, and her calico kitty.
Maren - Mezzo Sub
Maren was born in San Diego, but raised in the big city of Los Angeles. She’s been singing since childhood when she first started to sing along to her dad’s piano playing in the living room of their Mission Hills home. At age 5 she moved to LA and started singing in church and school choirs until she eventually attended the University of Southern California where she sang and supervised the only all-female a cappella group, The Sirens. In 2016, Maren moved back to San Diego to start attending graduate school and start her career as a Marriage and Family Therapist. Since college she has been itching to get back into the a cappella community, which led her to find Voxy.
When she’s not singing and therapizing, she spends time exercising, at the beach, songwriting, or relaxing at home with her cat Gretchen Weiners and her husband.
Sierra - Alto Sub Sierra is so excited to join the Voxy ladies! Born and raised in San Diego, she discovered her love for music at an early age, performing for anyone who would listen. Previous credits include her joining the cast of Beauty and the Beast by standing up in her seat & belting out the final chorus while bowing to the rows above her in the mezzanine section at The Civic. She was five years old and thankfully cute.
Sierra has sung and competed with various choral groups all throughout her formative years in school. She then became passionate about songwriting, piano and musical theatre, embracing whatever project she could get her hands on. In 2014 she graduated LSU with a BA in Theatre, dabbling in Film and Improv, but only found her first a cappella group when she moved to Austin and joined The Austonettes.
Over the last seven years, she's found herself on quite the adventure, living in Chicago and Austin, but recently moved back home and is enjoying all the things she took for granted: the ocean, beautiful weather & authentic Mexican food. When Sierra isn't singing, you can find her perfecting her baking skills or laying out an itinerary for her next adventure abroad.
Laura - Foxy Voxy - Alumnus
Laura was born in Germany but has been a California girl for most of her life. She started singing at a young age. In high school she was in advanced choir (madrigals), and sang at the Renaissance Faire in the summers. In her free time, Laura is a songwriter and dreams of being a touring musician. Voxy is her first a cappella group and she loves performing around town.
Laura works as the Marketing Director for Southern Cross Property Consultants, where she coordinates educational programs for the company as well as takes care of all marketing activities. Laura also strives to make a difference as the mother of two children still young enough to consider her a role model. Last year, she launched a campaign to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the company by giving 1500 hours of community service. Her team helped build a house with Habitat for Humanity, save animals with the Humane Society, and is scheduled to feed the hungry with Feeding America.
Kristin - Girlie Vox - Alumnus
Kristin (aka KT) grew up in the small town of Charleston, IL. As the daughter of an organist and a soprano, she was destined to be a musician. She has been a serious classical pianist since age 6 and started singing in junior high. Lured into the world of Renaissance chamber music in college, Kristin was a member of the inaugural Yale Schola Cantorum and sang with a number of professional church choirs in Manhattan and Washington, DC. Her foray into pop music began as a member of the Young New Yorkers Chorus, then in an alternative rock band while in medical school.
Kristin moved to sunny San Diego in 2015 to pursue subspecialty medical training as a Gynecologic Oncology fellow at UCSD. Kristin is brand spankin' new to singing a cappella and is loving every minute! When not singing or working, she can be found running half marathons, doing CrossFit with Jenna (yay!), or picking out a new headband :)
Rachael - Rocker Vox - Alumnus Rachael is originally from the small town of Pensacola, Florida. In high school she was part of an exclusive a cappella chorus and won a vocal scholarship for college. She earned a double major in Psychology and Philosophy from University of Cincinnati. During college Rachael started fronting cover bands, a career she then worked for two decades in various forms including acoustic folk duos to hard rock cover bands to piano goth rock trios and everything in between.
Rachael moved to San Diego in 2016 and "she do hair" at a local barbershop, specializing in natural and fantasy hair coloring. Rachael is brand new to contemporary a cappella and can't believe what a cool new music venture it is. When she isn't working on hair or her various music projects, she regularly enjoys seeing live music, partying, and attending music festivals. She also loves Jameson and her four fur babies, and is thinking about foraying into burlesque again.
